Nanoweek 2015 Outreach Programme

fire2 in the hand SSPC WorkshopEvery Nanoweek, we encourage science students to come and visit the country’s best nanotech research facilities and companies.

This year, local Limerick students will participate in themed workshops, onsite in University of Limerick. These workshops include the SFI Discover funded project Science Live! and the SSPC Smell Factory, along with the EU funded project Nano SchoolBox.

Workshop 1: SSPC Smell Factory: Gross Germs and Bizarre Bacteria:

Bad bacteria and gross germs are everywhere, 1,000,000,000,000 can live on one gram of poop! It is getting harder and harder to prevent these bugs! Did you know that something as simple as washing your hands or using a disinfectant anti-bacterial hand gel can keep you safe? Come and join us to learn how to make and take home your own anti-bacterial hand gel and learn about all types of bacteria; the good, the bad and the REALLY ugly!

Workshop 2: Science LIVE!

Science LIVE! aims to introduce primary students to cutting-edge scientific research around Ireland Our pilot programme, Microscopes LIVE! introduces the exciting world of nanoscience, materials science and microscopy through experiment kits and interactive resources. It provides an introduction to the properties of nanomaterials & microscopy and aims to inspire the entire classroom to learn more about nanoscience!

Workshop 3: Nano Schoolbox

The Nano Schoolbox is a European resource kit based upon exploring Nanoscience and learning about its application in our daily lives!

Using the Schoolbox kit, researchers from Tyndall National Institute will help students to figure out just how Nanoscience can make wood repel water, and create an invisible ink for secret messages! Using the School box kits allow students to drive their own experiments and investigate Nanoscience just like we do in Tyndall National Institute, where our researchers wok on nanotechnology for devices, healthcare and new materials.

Plus join us on Twitter @NanoNetIreland and use the hashtag #nanoweek2015 to keep up to date on fun facts about nanoscience! Tell us how Nanoscience affects your life and what you would do if you were a nanoscientist!

For teachers – check out free Nano resources at http://nanora.eu/nanotechnology – learn about Nanoscience with Nora and try some experiements for yourself!
